An integral part of Asian Education Group and ranked as one of the best Law Colleges in Delhi NCR –Asian Law Collegewelcomed its new batch of B.A.LL.B. & LL.B. students by launching a grand week-long Orientation Programme scheduled from Monday, 26th October 2020 to Saturday, 31st October 2020. However, in view of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and keeping in mind the social distancing norms, this programme was organized virtually to benefit the students who commenced upon a new phase in their academic life.
Wednesday, 28th October 2020 marked the Day 3 of the ALC B.A.LL.B. & LL.B. Orientation Programme 2020. The day was dedicated to a highly absorbing introductory session on Asian Law College’s LEGAL AID SOCIETY that aims to render services to the poor and weaker section of the society and act as an inexpensive machinery for handling services of basic nature like legal advice, counselling and other documents of legal importance. It also seeks to discourage the court litigation amongst the people by conducting effective pre-litigation counselling sessions like mediation, negotiation etc.
The day also witnessed the grand finale of “YOUNG ASIAN LEGAL PIONEERS COMPETITION 2020”, which was built-up as a well-meaning competition that allowed the students to share their acumen to create a workable plan for the betterment of society. At this grand finale of “YOUNG ASIAN LEGAL PIONEERS COMPETITION 2020”, Ms. APARAJITA AMAR, Founder, Sexual Harassment Legal Compliance Advisory (SHLC) was the ‘Guest of Honour’ and the distinguished ‘Judge’ who not only declared the winner for YALPC 2020, but also delivered an illuminating LLS Lecture on the topic “WOMEN RIGHTS & GENDER EQUALITY” wherein she presented a detailed account of the laws pertaining to the need for creating safe work places and shared some priceless insights into the subject.
Founder of SHLC-Sexual Harassment Law Compliance Advisory, Ms. Aparajita Amar is a Certified Sexual Harassment and Workplace Diversity Advisor and an Advocate. She is the recipient of the “Exceptional Women of Excellence” award by the Women Economic Forum in 2019.
SHLC-Sexual Harassment Law Compliance Advisory provides documentation, consultation and advisory services to organizations, assisting them in complying with the Sexual Harassment Laws. The organization works on drafting anti-sexual harassment policies, sensitization and awareness sessions and ICC capacity building, enabling workplaces to be inclusive, diverse and gender neutral.
In addition, Ms. Aparajita has designed and conducted training, sensitization and awareness workshops for employees, supervisors and senior management. She is an external member for several organizations. She has also designed and conducted capacity building and strengthening programmes for Internal Complaints Committee Members.
At the Day 3 of the ALC B.A.LL.B. & LL.B. Orientation Programme 2020, in her ‘Guest of Honour’ address delivered from virtual platform, Ms. Aparajita Amar at first thanked Ms. Garima Malhotra of ALC for her “lovely” introduction and then congratulated the students on this important day of their academic life.
Coming on to her LLS Lecture on the topic “WOMEN RIGHTS & GENDER EQUALITY”, she went on to educate the students on the bane of sexual harassments obtaining in society and the need for safe work places for Indian women within this situation. She talked at length about the various laws that have been enacted in India in this regard and how it fares in context to the ground realities. She also spoke in detail about the activities undertaken by her own organization – SHLC-Sexual Harassment Law Compliance Advisory – in this regard and the various challenges that still need to be countered.
This was followed by a vibrant Q&A session wherein students put up a number of questions related to the topic of the day to which Ms. Aparajita Amar provided authoritative answers. Thereafter, the day’s session entered into the last leg with a review of the workable plan submissions made by students as part of the “YOUNG ASIAN LEGAL PIONEERS COMPETITION 2020” grand finale proceedings. A total of 160 presentations were made by the students, out of which 5 were shortlisted for consideration of the winner of the YALPC 2020 Competition. The criteria for selection was a review of “Agenda, Action, Outcome & Legal Interface Plan.”
Confessing that she was highly moved by the “very important social topics” brought up at this competition, Ms. Aparajita Amar acknowledged that “all 5 shortlisted submissions reflected some most important aspects of social living that needed to be corrected.” Asserting that it was difficult to choose one among them as best, she however declared Mr. Dominic Joseph’s action plan on child protection in India, “BACHPAN BACHAO ANDOLAN”, as the winner for this year’s “YOUNG ASIAN LEGAL PIONEERS COMPETITION”.
Once done, this most valuable session with the young, dynamic legal activist – Ms. Aparajita Amar, Founder, Sexual Harassment Legal Compliance Advisory (SHLC) – came to a most fitting end!
